Virus scanning occurs on written files only. In this case, there was no writing and only the Perl process was going amok. I would suppose that virus scanning would show the scanner process as taking most of the CPU, no? At any rate, we couldn't figure out what the problem was on that particular machine and since we needed the system up as soon as possible, we migrated it to another machine. Now, everything is working very well. Thanks to all that helped.
