That's very interesting, I ran ur exact code (except for $x++) and I got a
much smaller difference.

RE 1336898/s -- -3%
substr 1381215/s 3% --
27 seconds
Rate RE substr
RE 1319261/s -- -9%
substr 1445087/s 10% --
26 seconds
I have build 811 on Celeron 1.4GHz. Do u have some optimization that
drastically speeds up substr?
