But I think that's starting to get messy.

Not really. If you have fumble fingers, this way avoids unwantde errors
:p
Yeah, 24hrs later after a bit of sleep and a few cups of coffee and I
can see your point. It's one of those things that I think is colored by
the languages you used prior to perl. The backwards notations and $_ are
things that takes some time to sit comfortably. I work with a couple of
guys who write a little code but mainly just change parameters in sripts
that are written by myself and another senior programmer. In my
environment idiomatic perl sometimes causes more problems that it solves.

And the strict and warnings were not so much left out as removed after
I'd finished. My original did compile under strict and warnings. Again,
I was trying to keep it clear and uncluttered so the subtle part of the
script wouldn't be obscured. Strict and warned version below.

Okay. But even in our production stuff I leave them on. Theres not
really a valid excuse to leave them off, comment them out, or leave them
out for clarity. You obviously know Perl so you should advocate good
practise.
I misread and thought you were saying that my version hadn't compiled.
My bad.
Ditto on using strict and warnings, no exceptions in production code.
Sometimes leave it out of foo files, but usually not. For me this was a
foo file, but I'll consider myself chastised. Trying too hard to keep it
short. :-(
Cheers
Just in (not trying to piss a bloke off)
No worries, I was just playing round in someone elses problem while
trying to dial down the aggravation from a very long day in the salt mine.
Salt mine beckons... :-)
