Works ok for me:

use warnings;

$s1 = "xxxxx\n";
$s2 = "yyyyy\n";
$s3 = "zzzzz\n";

print $s1, $s2, $s3;

for($s1, $s2, $s3) {
   $_ =~ s/\n/\\par\n/;
}

print $s1, $s2, $s3;

__END__
