"Web Client Programming with Perl" from O'Reilly (ISBN 1-56592-214-X) has a
chapter on sockets. Though it spends more time talking about the lwp
library (which is the better way to go). The lwp library puts a user
friendly wrapper around sockets. (Well, at least more friendly than raw
sockets.)
