Andrew,

Let's clear this up right now. :-)

NTEmacs *is* GNU Emacs. It builds from the *same* source distribution
on which all UNIX-variant binaries are built. Just like there is only
*one* Perl source distribution.

The behavior of GNU Emacs on a Win32 platform isn't identical to its
behavior on UNIX platforms. For many of the same reasons that Perl
has. (Example: Remember Jan's recent explanation of why signals still
are likely to be fragile on Win32?) Emacs has some similar issues.

However, for 98% of the tasks for which you would want to use Emacs,
it's behavior on Win32 is identical to its behavior on a UNIX variant.
(And believe me, a devoted Emacs user does want to use Emacs for 98%
of his tasks. Emacs is far, far more than a text editor. In fact, I'm
composing and sending this very message with Emacs.)

I presently do all of my work on Windows NT and 98. However, if I found
myself on Linux tomorrow, I'd take Emacs and Perl with me and hardly
miss a beat. :-) (But I'd gladly leave IIS behind. :-)

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
