Search the p5p archives for self-tie and you will find lots of food
for thought.  IIRC the basic problem is not as much *self*-tying as
*recursive*-tying in general: if you have a circular dependency you
can't stop before you have a core dump in your lap/shoes.  Ask Alan
Burlison for more information.
