xsubpp is kind of picky about indentation and blank lines sometimes. When 
things start in the left margin of an .XS file, xsubpp often thinks they're 
starting a new function definition, and if they're not it gets confused. 
Side effect of not having to actually *have* a function body.

Short answer--don't do that. Indent everything in a function at least one 
space.
