Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, It appears that doing something more obvious with STDERR (such as re-opening it in a BEGIN sub) gets rid of the SEGV.
I am not sure why I used a tied filehandle for handling STDERR (apart from solidarity with STDOUT, which does need the tie because the required processing is completely different from a normal filehandle).
