Untangle the fragile long double vs NV mess.
Instead of using long double as the master if HAS_LONG_DOUBLE
(note not USE_LONG_DOUBLE), prefer using NV as the master,
using long double only if necessary. Reduces wild casting,
implicit and explicit.
