As someone interested in both Perl and garbage collection, I've been following the discussion here with interest. Since I haven't seen it mentioned, I thought I would point out Paul Wilson's work in this area at UT Austin, which I found useful back when I was doing GC stuff. He has a survey of GC options and their tradeoffs, some experiments measuring typical programs' memory locality, and a discussion of how these things relate.
