Hi Grant, Just as a suggestion, i would use the PO format (already used by other tools than gettext, like KDE) so we get for free all the catalog manager tools (like Kbabel, which is very nice, by the way).
And maybe error codes output could be just another target language. So:
fprintf(stderr, i18n ("Error #43: Can't stat file\n") )
Prints just "ERR43\n" when language var is set to, say, "CODES".
