I'd be quite happy if they got yanked out of the core and into a module.
We'll need to run through the things to make sure that whatever tricks they
use to do their magic are generally available--perhaps a late-binding
quoting operator or something of the sort.
We could patch 'em up to work with lexicals and do footers (and possibly
automagic break handling) while we (or, rather, someone else... :) are at it.
