There are about eight uses of "rather than", not all seem strong enough
to me: they leave room for "the other thing".

I don't think that "instead of" should always rather be used, often "and
not" or "so it doesn't" will be better.

Among the eight is a "rather" with a missing "than". There is also a
"rather easier", that one must be good.
