I think you meant either:

    my @add = $string xx $repeat;


    my $add = $string x $repeat;

Or perhaps:

    my $add = [ $string xx $repeat ];
    # This is what your current code does, but I think it's best if Perl
    # enforced that you be explicit about the [].
