regarding this i tried
`echo $a >>log.txt`
and it did not work
only `echo aa>>log.txt` where aa is a text worked
any ideas why?

$ perl -e'$a=q/foobar/;`echo $a>>log.txt`'; cat log.txt
foobar
no idea what went wrong for you, but it must be somewhere else in the code.
Of course this approach is very dangerous if "$a" (bad name - it's a special
variable used for sort in perl) comes from untrusted user input - use taint
mode, or sanitize it first!!

You could also turn off I/O buffering - see "autoflush" in the manpage for
"select" or IO::Handle, or the variable "$|"
Of course it has performance impacts, but it will probably help.
