Well, just for starters, Matlab is both a language and the IDE/interactive-environment, while PDL is just a language. But of course the main difference is in the hundreds of functions Matlab has for solving mathematical equations in a large number of fields. This is not to say PDL doesn't have some things which Matlab doesn't (open-source, Perl, free-as-in-beer :)) or that it does not have it's place. But there are many things in Matlab which do not exist in PDL.
