I did a CVS update on my copy of PDLrc1. Graphics/Makefile.PL seems to have your xdpyinfo changes in it and they work fine on both my Linux FC3 i386 and x86_64 systems. I coded up a quick version of the xdpyinfo opt-out test that seems to pass for my system. It should choose WITH_3D=>0 on your problem opengl system. If you would not mind taking a quick look, trying it out in place of the rc1 file, and letting me know if this is reasonable hack or a fragile, gross, breakable hack.
