Running "$ perl -w -Mblib t/xvals.t" produces the expected output (below), and "make install" runs smoothly. I notice that xvals.t doesn't "use Test;" and so has no Begin or Plan blocks.

The 'print "1..4\n";' is critical to the successful running of such files. Perhaps, by same strange quirk, that line needs to be at the very beginining of the runtime code .... or at least before sub ok{} ?
