I just switched to Ubuntu today and re-installed

does anybody know if this package is going to disappear in the future

Debian?
pgperl has already disappeared from Debian. After some months being
orphaned without a maintainer, it was dropped. See
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=279820
and
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/06/msg00014.html
Apparently Sarge was the last release containing pgperl -- it's not in
Etch.
