Thanks Chris and Henning for your ideas, clarification, and feedback. I looked into the dependencies on my Ubuntu machine via synaptic and found some strange entries. Of course, the DEPENDENCIES file from the tarball contains everything I need, so I'll start off working with that.
The wiki is slightly updated. I'm off to bed but hope to make some progress in the next couple of days. If you don't have editing access to the wiki, feel free to send any ideas about the manual install to me. David
