Yes, I think Craig is right. Here's a link to a paper that discusses
an index, written by one Thornton (notice the spelling difference),
which is cited elsewhere in reference to Thornton's Separability
Index:

The only formula in the paper looks pretty simple and should be easy
to wrap in some PP code, but I'm 99% certain that there is no pre-made
code out there.
