Yes, that was the impression I got, too, when I took a quick look at the
respective manuals (not long after I had sent off my post).
Do you have another suggestion ?
I wondered whether PDL::FFTW, despite that it uses only version 2, might
still be the best way to "rolling your own" PDL::DCT.
But I don't really know.
I do know (like you) that it would be a good thing for PDL if some competent
person were to find the time and motivation to upgrade PDL::FFTW to use
version 3 :-)
