I'm running a Linux xterm and if I type Ctrl+V Ctrl+4, I see that it
generates a Ctrl+\ (^\).

Under many terminals, Ctrl+\ causes SIGQUIT to be sent. More info at

If you don't want the Ctrl+\ key-sequence to map to SIGQUIT, run

    stty quit undef
