FACULTY OF SCIENCE

a). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Computer Science)

Suitable applicants in Computer Science with research and
teaching experience in the following areas: software
engineering, computer networks, systems analysis, algorithm
designs computer organization, object-oriented programming and
methodology, operating systems, Internet and World Wide Web.
Ability to teach different courses in Computer Science and to
supervise student projects at the undergraduate level would be

b). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Mathematics)

Suitable applicants should have a postgraduate qualification,
preferably a Ph.D., with at least three years of teaching
experience and postgraduate research in the areas of Numerical
Analysis, Computational Mathematics, Applied Statistics or
Operations Research. Ability to teach different courses in
Mathematics at the undergraduate level would be an advantage.

FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

c). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Critical and Creative Thinking)

Applicants should have post-graduate qualifications and
teaching and research experience in philosophy, particularly in
Logic, Critical and Creative Thinking and Argument Analysis.
Knowledge of non-Western alternatives to rational discourse is
preferred. In addition, competence in non-linear discursive
approaches, e.g. lateral thinking and creative thinking, would
be sought. Ability to teach both in English and Malay would be

d). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Geography)

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree and a minimum of five
years of postgraduate research and teaching experience in 1).
Human Geography, specializing in Tourism and/or Recreation
Geography, and/or Social/Cultural Geography and 2). Techniques
In Geography in at least three of the following areas:
Cartography, Map Reading and Interpretation, Quantitative
Methods, Computer Applications in Geography (Geographic
Information Systems) and Remote Sensing. Ability to teach
courses in Regional Geography (exposure in both the Developed

SULTAN HASSANAL BOLKIAH INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

e). Applicants should have a master's degree or a Ph.D. and
experience in teaching educational management and in training
prospective and serving school heads/principals. They should be
willing to teach in an interdisciplinary and team-based
environment. The ability to teach in the Malay language, and
possession of a basic knowledge in Islam are of great advantage.
A strong commitment to research is essential and a good
publication record will be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach in at least
two relevant areas in educational management, namely educational
policy and planning, managing the school curriculum, human
resource management in education, and School Leadership. They
will be expected to participate in graduate student supervision,
to conduct research, and to assist in the various ongoing
research activities of the department, including teaching

f). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Language Education - English)

Applicants should have a master's degree or a Ph.D. in the
area of Language Education with teaching experience in ESL
methodology at the primary school level; emergent literacy and
corrective language program: or experience in teaching English
Language proficiency. They should be willing to teach in an
interdisciplinary and team-based environment. Tertiary teaching
experience in the areas specified, a basic knowledge in Islam
and a good record of scholarly research and publication are an
advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach courses in the
relevant areas of ESL methodology, emergent literacy or remedial
language development in the training of Primary School Teachers
and English Language proficiency. They are expected to
participate in teaching praxis supervision, graduate student
supervision, conduct in service and research and assist in the

g). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Language Education - Malay)

Applicants should hove a master's or a Ph.D. in the area of
the teaching of Bahasa Melayu with teaching experience in both
methodology and content of Malay Language in the training of
primary and secondary school teachers. Tertiary teaching
experience in the areas specified, a basic knowledge of Islam
and good record of scholarly research and publication are an
advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach in the
relevant areas of Malay Language methodology and Malay Language
content for primary and secondary teacher training programmers.
They are expected to participate in teaching praxis supervision,
graduate student supervision, conduct inservice and research and
assist in the various on-going research activities of the

h). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Physical Education)

Applicants should have a master's or a Ph.D. in the relevant
discipline and experience in teaching Physical Education at
Primary/Secondary Tertiary levels. The ability to teach in the
Malay Language, and a basic knowledge in Islam Education would
be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach Physical
Education and Sports Science from certificate to graduate
levels. They are expected to conduct inservice courses for
teachers and sports enthusiasts, and to provide leadership in
Instruction, research, supervision and co-curricular. Ref:

i). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Physics Education)

Applicants should have a master's or a Ph.D. in the relevant
discipline and experience in teaching Physics Education from
certificate to graduate levels. The ability to teach Secondary
Physics (form 5 and 6) and also Secondary Physics Methodology
courses would be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach Physics
Education from certificate to graduate level. They are also
expected to conduct inservice courses for teachers and to
participate in the graduate student supervision, conduct
research and assist in the various on-going research activities

j). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Science Education)

Applicant should have a master's or a Ph.D. and experience in
teaching Science Education from certificate to graduate levels.
He/She should have ability to teach science content and
methodology courses in the Diploma of Education (Primary) and
Bachelor of Arts Primary Education programmers. Ability to teach
in Malay and English would be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach both content
and methodology courses in Science Education to both diploma and
undergraduate levels as well as to undertake research. They are
also expected to participate in the graduate student
supervision, conduct research and assist in the on-going

k). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Mathematics Education)

Applicant should have a master's or a Ph.D. and experience in
teaching Mathematics Education from certificate to graduate
levels. He/She should have the ability to teach Mathematics
content and methodology courses in the Diploma of Education
(Primary) and Bachelor or Arts Primary Education Programmers.
Ability to teach in Malay and English would be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach both content
and methodology courses of teaching Mathematics Education to
both Diploma and undergraduate levels as well as to undertake
research. They are also expected to participate in the graduate
student supervision, conduct research and assist in the on-going

l). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Geography Education)

Applicant should have a master's or a Ph.D. and experience in
teaching geography/social studies/environmental studies from
certificate to graduate levels. The ability to teach Pelajaran
Am in Malay and a basic knowledge in Islamic Education will be
an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach both content
and methodology courses in geography/environmental studies and
Pelajaran Am from certificate to graduate levels. They are also
expected to supervise students in teaching practice and research
projects in addition to providing leadership in instruction,

m). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Art Education)

Applicants should have a master's degree or a Ph.D. in the
relevant discipline and the experience of teaching Art Education
from certificate to graduate levels. The ability to teach in
Malay and have various knowledge such as making pottery, ceramic
making, copper tooling, wood carving and Islamic calligraphy, as
well as a basic knowledge in Islam would be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach content and
methodology courses, teach Art Education to both certificate and
undergraduate levels as well as to undertake research. They are
expected to participate in teaching practice supervision,
conduct research and assist in the on-going research activities

n). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer(Curriculum and Pedagogy)

Applicants should have a master's degree or a Ph.D. and
experience in teaching curriculum and pedagogy. They should be
willing to teach in an interdisciplinary and team-based
environment. The ability to teach in the Malay Language,
possession of a basic knowledge in Islam and a good record of
scholarly research and publication are an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach specific
pedagogical skills and processes and curriculum design,
implementation and evaluation in teacher education programming
at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They are
also expected to participate in teaching practice supervision,
conduct research and assist in the various on-going research

o). Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor
(Educational/Information Technology)

Applicants should have a master's degree or a Ph.D. and
relevant experience in teaching educational and information
technology at school and tertiary levels. They should be willing
to teach in a team-based environment. The ability to teach in
the Malay Language, possession of a basic knowledge in Islam and
a good record of scholarly research and publication are an
advantage.

Applicants should have an established record of research and
publication in the relevant areas. Successful candidates will be
expected to teach educational media, resource design and
production, evaluation of educational, multimedia and computer
and information technology applications in education at primary
and secondary school levels. They are expected to be familiar
with use of IT in schools and teacher education. They are also
expected to participate in teaching practice supervision, to
conduct research in one or more of the above areas, and assist
in the various ongoing research activities of the department.

p). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Sociology of Education)

Applicants should have a master's degree or a Ph.D. and
experience in teaching the subject. They should be willing to
teach in an interdisciplinary and team-based environment. The
ability to teach in the Malay Language, possession of a basic
knowledge in Islam and a good record of scholarly research and
publication are an advantage.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach in a
multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment at the
diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They are also
expected to participate in teaching practice supervision, as
well as conduct research and assist in the various ongoing
research activities of the department. Teaching and research
experience in Southeast Asia in general, and Borneo in

q). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor (Marketing
and International Business)

The successful applicant should be able to design and teach
courses in the areas of Marketing Management, International
Marketing, Strategic Marketing and Services Marketing and
International Business at BBA, MBA and Executive levels. Active
participation in the activities of the Department of Management
Studies (such as research, publication and constancy) is also
expected.

Applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in marketing,
international business or related field from a recognized
university, a minimum of 5 years of university teaching
experience, and a satisfactory research, publication and
constancy record. Familiarity with international business issues
and dynamics, especially in the Asia Pacific region, and an
ability to teach other functional areas in management would be

r). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor (Quantitative
Methods, Research Methodology and Production and Operations
Management)

The successful applicant should be able to design and teach
courses in the areas of Quantitative Methods, Quantitative
Analysis, Business Research Methods, Operations Research and
Production and Operations Management courses at BSA, MBA and
Executive levels. Active participation in the activities of the
Department of Management Studies (such as research, publication
and constancy) is also expected.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in quantitative methods,
statistical analysis research methodology or in a related field
from recognized university, a minimum of 5 years of university
teaching experience, and a satisfactory research, publication
and constancy record. Postgraduate teaching experience
(including Master's/Doctoral research supervision) will be
preferred. Familiarity with international business issues and
dynamics especially in the Asia Pacific region, and an ability
to teach other functional areas in management would be an added

s). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Accounting and Finance)

The successful applicant should be able to teach courses in
the areas of Accounting (finance and management), Corporate
Finance, Financial Management, Auditing and Taxation, Accounting
Information Systems and International Accounting and Finance at
SBA, MBA and Executive levels. Ability to contribute to courses
in Islamic Banking and Finance is also required. Active
participation in the activities of the Department of Management
Studies (such as research, publication and constancy) is also
expected.

Applicants should have a Master's and/or Ph.D. degree in
accounting or finance from a recognized university. A minimum of
5 years of university teaching and a satisfactory research,
publication and constancy record are expected. Postgraduate
teaching experience will be an added advantage. Professional
qualifications such as CPA, ACCA or CIMA, with wide-ranging
teaching, research and constancy in the Asia Pacific region, and
an ability to teach other functional areas in management such as

t). Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor (Politics and Public
Policy)

The successful candidate would be expected to teach B.A. and
Master's level courses in the fields of the public policy
process (policy formulation, implementation and evaluation) and
in the politics of Southeast Asia states. Specialization in a
substantive policy field would be an added advantage. Ref:

u). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Public Administration)

The successful candidate would be expected to teach BA and
Master's level courses in the fields of the public sector
financial administration, public management and public analysis.

v). Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Economics)

The Department offers a BA Economics major/minor and also
teaches economic content to Education students. A coursework
Master's is planned to be offered in 2001. The successful
applicant will be required to contribute to the Department's
teaching across a range of courses including undergraduate micro
and macroeconomics. Applicants may be required to teach Master's
level courses in the future. A specialization in International
trade and finance and good quantitative skills would be an
advantage, but applicants with expertise in any area of

QUALIFICATIONS

a). Lecturer

Minimum MA/M.Ed./M.Sc. with at least 3 years' relevant
teaching experience in tertiary teaching and research.

b). Senior Lecturer

Normally a Ph.D. (or in certain cases MA/M.Ed./M.Sc.) with at
least 5 years' relevant experience and a proven record in
teaching, research and administration.

c). Associate Professor

Candidates should already be holding the post of Senior
Lecturer with at least 5 years' relevant experience and a proven
record in teaching, research and administration.

d). Professor

Candidates should have extensive relevant teaching experience
and outstanding academic record of research and publication and
an established international reputation.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

1. The appointment will be on permanent basis for citizens of
Brunei Darussalam. For non-citizens, appointment will be by
contract for a period of three years, which is renewable subject
to mutual agreement.

2. The annual salary range is as follows:

Lecturer: BD$33,720 - BD$50,880; Senior Lecturer: BD$55,200 -
BD$62,400; Associate Professor: BD$64,800; Professor: BD$70,800

Exchange rate for Brunei Dollars to 1 unit of foreign currency
as of 16 May 2000.

USD - 1.7375; GBP - 2.6533; EURO - 1.6171; AUD - 1.0275;
CAN - 1.1823; NZD - 0.8527

3. Other benefits

a.) Bonus (one-month salary for Lecturer/Senior Lecturer. 1/2
month salary for Associate Professor/Professor) after each 12
months of satisfactory service.

b.) Gratuity (25% of last drawn salary x 36 months at the end
of the contract).

c.) Education allowance and children's passage.

d.) Subsidized housing (staff contribute BD$130 per month).

e.) Free medical and dental services.

f.) Interest-free car loan.

g.) Annual leave of 48 days.

h.) Passage and removal allowance.

At Present there is no personal income tax in Brunei
Darussalam.
