The Government of the Republic of Indonesia has affirmed its commitment to protect and secure the safety of foreigners and will take resolute measures against individuals, or groups whose conduct include that of threatening actions against foreigners in Indonesia, or burning the flags or symbols of other nations, or effigies of their heads of state. This statement was announced in Jakarta on Thursday, October 4, 2001, after a Cabinet meeting led by President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia also stated Jakarta’s official political position on current and imminent situations related to the terrorist attacks in the United States of America, as follows:

  1. Indonesia remains committed to join the international fight against terrorism

  2. Indonesia calls on, and remains persistent that the United Nations take the initiative in waging war on terrorism in a collective, effective and proper set of actions

  3. Indonesia expects that such proper, purposeful actions are to be taken without leading to another human tragedy

  4. Indonesia also called on all parties to prevent the outbreak of an open war that would endanger world peace, and to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
