Jabat erat, Ahmad Syamil Jonesboro, AR www.clt.atate.edu/asyamil ----------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Non-Residents Graduate Student's Guide to Preparing Taxes The following is the most promising method we have found for filing an income tax return to try to recover the income taxes withheld from the tuition portion of your award. The procedure is outlined in the 1996 Tax Guide for College Teachers and Other College Personnel(Academic Information Service, Inc.) and also based upon oral advice from a representative from the Ernst and Young accounting firm. We have met with this representative and he concurs with our approach and methodology on an unofficial basis. A formal opinion was agreed to be unnecessary for our situation. The following is only a suggestion and it is up to each graduate student to determine their own tax liability. For Non-Residents (The following has not been discussed with a qualified tax advisor but seems straightforward): 1. Use form 1040NR-EZ 2. Report all of your income and other taxable compensation on line 3 as it appears on your W2 3. On line 8, Scholarship and Fellowship grants excluded, on the dashed line write "tuition award, see attached letter" and in the box enter the amount of your tuition or amounts given to you that were used for tuition and were in excess of reasonable payment for service. 4. On the line for occupation be sure to write "Graduate Student" Include with your return: 1. Letter explaining what you are claiming on line 8 (see example) 2. Original admission letter or letter explaining degree requirements. 3. A copy of a document specifying your tuition amounts for 1996.
