"(The move is) ... based on their confidence in the long-term growth potential of the Indonesian economy and projected local market demand for Honda automobiles," the number three Japanese car firm said in a statement. PT Honda Prospect Motor, an Indonesian joint venture, would build the "state-of-the-art" plant at Karawang, near Jakarta, by April 2003. It will have a production capacity of 40,000 autos per year. "The new Karawang factory will take over the production of all Honda automobiles in Indonesia," said Honda chief executive Hiroyuki Yoshino in the statement. Honda would also use the plant to enhance its export capabilities to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market, he said. |
