ATTENTION: ALL NON-IMMIGRANT VISA HOLDERS

As of April 1, 2002, all non-immigrant visa holders, including students and
scholars, who travel to Canada or Mexico to renew their visas at a U.S.
Consulate in those countries will not be allowed to re-enter the U.S. if
their renewal applications are denied.

In such a case, any individual with a non-immigrant visa will have to
return to his/her home country to renew the visa. In addition, individuals
should be prepared to stay in Canada or Mexico while their visa renewal
applications are being reviewed and/or processed. This may take up to a
week or more.
Non-immigrants from the following countries can apply for renewal of their
visas ONLY in their home countries: Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, North
Korea, and Cuba.

Students and scholars going to Canada or Mexico for pleasure visits of less
than 30 days will still be allowed to re-enter the U.S. on expired visas
accompanied by a signed I-20 form or IAP-66 form, I-94 card and valid
passport, except students from the seven countries mentioned above.

Be advised that you may experience difficulties with port-of-entry officers
even though you are legally re-entering the U.S. UCLA students and
scholars who do encounter difficulties should have the port-of-entry
officers contact Jimmie White - Counseling Attorney in the UCLA Office of
International Students and Scholars during the normal workweek (Monday to
Friday between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm, excluding university holidays) at
1-310-825-1681.

Students and scholars are advised to make an appointment with their visa
counselor in OISS if they have any questions about this new rule issued by
the U.S. Department of State.
