Title:
EMPHASIZING DEWEYS CONSTRUCTIVISM IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A DESIGN FOR
INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING COURSE

Abstract:
Journalist is one of dream jobs in Indonesia. Since the fall of
Suhartos authoritarian regime in 1998, the press industry has been
flourishing rapidly due to the new government policy to abort the licensing
requirement. Unfortunately, the quality of human resources cannot catch up
with the escalation of press businesses. Indonesian higher education as
the main source of good journalists has been working hard to develop
good courses in journalism. The objective of this presentation is to give
an alternative design for one course. Apparently, there is none if not
few journalism or communication colleges in Indonesia that provide a
course with title "investigative reporting" in their curriculum. In fact,
the course is a required one in US colleges. Through this course,
indeed, the instructors could teach students the skill and knowledge
necessary to produce credible news and feature stories. Dewey has been known
as the pioneer of constructivism approach that emphasizes learner!
s' experience in learning process. It is interesting to design a course
that adopts Dewey's ideas. The presentation will also discuss many
basic factors that influence the course design, such as learner,
instructor, subject matter, and context or environment of the course. One of the
shifts that Indonesian students and professors must overcome is
reconstructing their perceptions. They were taught in traditional way of
learning that perceives teacher as the knowledge dispenser and students the
depositor of knowledge. Students will be lost in confusion when the
teacher's control over them has been eliminated.

Abstract:
CURRICULUM IDEOLOGIS

Over the last three decades, Indonesia has had a considerable number of
curriculums for secondary education. Seemingly, those who took in
charge in curriculum development have tried their uttermost to find the best
model of curriculum that met the expanding needs of Indonesian society.
As you may know, recently the Indonesian Minister of Education and
Culture established the new system of curriculum, namely,
competency-based curriculum. I assumed that the question behind the establishment of
such a curriculum is, What use is the best curriculum development in
the world if its not achieving something positive for students? To be
more deeply, it is worthwhile to look at glance into some curriculum
ideologies framework such as Child Study (Child-centered curriculum),
Scholar Academy, Social Efficiency, and Social Reconstruction. Hopefully,
through the lens of these curriculum ideologies we can examine and
scrutinize in detail the what and the how competency-based curriculu!
m are all about.
