. . .  Even before June, Google executives worried about infiltration of their
networks. The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the N.S.A. was tapping
into the links between data centers, the beating heart of tech companies
housing user information, confirming that their suspicions were not just
paranoia.

. . . Yet one major caveat remains. While the IETF might be able to secure the
pipes through which users’ data travel, users must also be able to trust the
parties where their data is stored: software, hardware and services.

Also, because the Gov't can force ISP's and internet companies to hand over
their keys, and without notifying the end users, all this requires that the
IETF implement peer to peer, or end user to end user applications with strong
encryption and those be engineered into the fabric of the internet.

It is widely known that https has been deciphered by the NSA.
