That's a famous bug that will happen in applications. KDE also had that bug for quite a time until Behdad fixed it. The bug is because the application or the rendering engine asks the font for a glyph for the character, where it shouldn't. The application or the rendering engine should not pass ZWNJ (and a few other "invisible" Unicode characters) down. I don't know if the bug is still present in latest versions of OpenOffice.org, but it won't hurt checking and reporting the bug. Please give me a URL to your bug report when you did it.
