Tony, the photos may be of a plaster worm, which is fairly common in the south,
since it was hanging from the ceiling. Tom Parker  -----Original Message-----

Subject: Re: [pestlist] Identify Pest cocoon?

Hi James These appear to be cocoons of Phereoeca uterella, the Household
Casebearer Moth. The caterpillars generally feed on silk (of spiders or other
moth cocoons), but they also feed on wool and hair, so can be a pest in some
collections. It's possible they are doing no damage, but clearly it would be
prudent to check all susceptible objects. The cocoons are fairly obvious, so
any infestation should be readily spotted.Tony

Hello MuseumPests,
I have was wondering if the experts on this list are able to identify the
source of some cocoons/pods that have appeared hanging from the ceiling of our
conservation workshop. They have appeared before around this time of the year.
Should I be concerned for the objects in the area?
Location is Charleston, SC and sorry for the blurry pictures. I will never
judge any of you ever again.
