There are other red mites, also quite abundant this time of year, that crawl in
to buildings. Their body shape is not like that on Bryobia mites and the
relative leg lengths aren’t what you see in this in so far as the hind 6 are
subequal and have the first pair very long. The red trombidioid or erythraeoid
(often called velvet) mites have subequal legs and the tarsi are slightly
enlarged. Sometimes the legs can be many times the body length, too. Some are
pollen feeders and you normally see the nymphs and adults crawling about. These
have 8 legs. Larvae are parasitic on other arthropods and have 6 legs and are
not as velvety as nymphs and adults.

The mite is reminiscent of the clover mite, Bryobia praetiosa. There are yet
other mites that are fairly consistent in form, but this one is particularly
abundant, especially in warmer months. They wander into dwellings though
impressively tiny gaps in the building envelope.

Subject: [pestlist] Possible Mite?

Hello,

Any chance someone can identify specifically what type of pest the attached is?
We're thinking it's a type of mite. It was found on a trap near an exit door.

Thanks,
Kristin
