Hmm, that’s gross but understandable; I also like to try new foods. In any
case, it’s more of a nuisance/squish risk than a real threat to the
collections, is that right?

Thank you Jeffrey, Genevieve, and Louis, for your advice late on a Friday
afternoon!

Looks like an erythraeid adult. Larvae are parasitic as 6-legged larvae on
other arthropods. Some feed on pollen. Predacious on smaller insects and mites
and eggs. There have been cases with certain species coming in from outdoors
and biting people, not so much to feed on but to taste.

Subject: [pestlist] Mites in collection

Hi All,

A visitor to our reading room notified a staff member that he was seeing small
red bugs near/on the collection he was consulting. The staff member trapped one
of the critters, which you can see in the attached photo.

Am I right in thinking that this is a clover mite or something similar?

Am I also right that mites of this kind are most likely coming in from the
outside, rather than living in/on a manuscript collection?

Thanks,

Brenna
