Today I found three full-grown silverfish, in one empty archival storage box! Several are usually found when moving any boxes around, or shuffling papers where they are hiding in the dark. They are most often found in our carpeted space that functions for office use as well as archives and a reference library. This room is usually warm, and not humidity controlled. We are in the Bay area in a coastal town. After a conversation with Adam Osgood at Historic New England, It appears the best first step is to get control over the relative humidity in the room that houses the archives. I also have increased cleaning and vacuuming, and purchased diatomaceous earth for the perimeter of the room, edge of wall where some boxes are stored and I believe where most of the silverfish are thriving. As a general rule for the archives, and particularly because of the pest problem, it is not agreeable to have my workspace in the same area as our historic photographs…..so that could be an eventual change. Any details about this type of silverfish or other ways you all have addressed storage problems in multi-purpose spaces, I would love to hear about! Many thanks. I am not concerned about the airborne diatomaceous risk to lungs- but maybe I should be!? I am interested about the wet application, perhaps at the baseboards?
