Georgia, Thanks for the great photos. I had always heard that this is another reason not to use poison bait for rodents. It tends to provide a nesting location for beetle larvae, resulting in a secondary infestation. We tend to go with snap traps or maybe live traps (both of which are checked daily) when there is any evidence of a rodent problem. Additional measures can also be taken to seal up the building and remove food and food trash to help prevent any rodent invasion in the first place. Besides the beetle harboring, other issues with the poison include secondary poisoning of birds of prey, cats, or other wildlife that might eat a mouse that escapes the building before expiring. In general, it is probably best to find another way of eradicating rodents. Best, Christina

There was a sticky trap nearby with beetles on and I just happened to check the rodent station by chance (this is usually checked by an external rodent provider). After opening the rodent trap I saw the beetles had bore holes all through the poison bait, I broke open the bait and could see happy little larvae inside! The poison bait is Contrac All-Weather Blox, I’m unsure if this is used in other countries or just here in New Zealand. We have these bait stations throughout the whole museum and I’m now worried that we are attracting drugstore beetles with our rodent prevention… any thoughts appreciated!
