Hi Liz,

There is some good information on monitoring posted on the MuseumPests.net
website: https://museumpests.net/monitoring-introduction/

The spacing for pheromone monitoring traps is based on the insect pest, the
attractiveness of the pheromone, whether the insect can fly as well other
environmental conditions.

If you are talking about un-baited sticky traps (blunder traps), then you want
a trap that sits flat on the ground that is butted up against the wall.
Initially start out by placing a trap on either side of the doors leading into
the area that you are monitoring (This tells you whether or not insects are
entering through those doors). Within the room, you can start with a trap in
each of the corners as insects tend to accumulate in corners. How many traps
that you place along any long length of wall should be based on the
susceptibility of the materials being stored there. Dee brought up good points
in her email when she said that she places more traps in the textile storage
areas than she might in ceramic storage areas. The more traps that you place
out, the more information that you have to assist you in making educated
decisions, but the number of traps has to make sense in what you are able to
check on a regular basis.

Subject: [pestlist] How many monitoring traps?

[EXTERNAL]

HI everyone,

I am reviewing our IPM monitoring procedures and I am wondering if there is an
optimum number of sticky traps we should be using. What are other people doing?
Is there a particular ration, per square metres or something that people use
when ordering supplies?

Thanks in advance,

Liz
