Adrienne,
If you have mice, dermestid’s might be living on the remains. Are you
monitoring for mice (best to trap with snap traps) or sticky traps for insects?
Do you have a definite ID on the bugs? Also – there is often plenty of
proteins in the dust for them to live on – dead insects, wool fibers etc.
Finally – is your housekeeping up to standard? Is there a way you can clean
under the dioramas and displays? Just a couple of suggestions! Good Luck!!

Gretchen

I did not thank it would attract carpet beetles, but I want to make sure. I
know that they fed on natural fibers, such as fur, feathers, and other organic
fibers. I just cannot figure out what the beetles are feeding on. They seem
to be in just the one area. We have another section with animal skins but no
beetles are were found on the skins. Only around this one area. I thought
their might had been mouse or other animal that crawl under the display and die
but there is no smell and did not see a dead animal remains, in the part that
we could see. Unless it is way up in the case where we cannot get to.

Thanks, for the help

No – carpet beetle larva eat wool, silk and other proteins. The larva will
bore into wood to pupate – but termite frass is not their target. Check the
pest id’s on Museum Pets Network for details on the life cycles and needs of
carpet beetles.

Hi, all

For several months our many exhibit hall has had carpet beetles. They go from
lot to hardly seeing them. With the change in weather they are on the move or
they have ran out of food. We finally were able to open up a permeant display
look under the area. We were hoping we could crawl into the space see what was
their like maybe dead animal or lot of dust. One could not go all the way
under it we only were able to see part of it from the opening because the open
that we thought was big was tiny space, with large cover. We are looking into
getting a camera that will go down inside of it. Until than we trying to
control keep them from damaging more items. We took a sample of the area it
had shedding of carpet beetles and something else that looked like maybe eggs?
They are the shape of corn. I do not thank it is dirt. Does anyone know what
it is?
