Hi Ľubica,

I don´t know any vacuum chambers in use for museum objects or publications from
Germany the last decades.

Many years ago, a conservator in Germany used big steel chambers with high
pressure (4-5bar) + high temperature (24-26°C) + low oxygen against wood boring
beetles at furniture with good results in one week.
For stored product pest control there are some practical experiences with
vacuum bags. Therefore you have to measure the level of oxygen and pression
inside the chamber during the vacuum. The level of vacuum depends of the
material and construction of the chamber.

Before you will use the vacuum chamber for museum objects, I would recommend a
test with some “Dummys” and gazed insects to control the mortality.
I think, high vacuum levels could damage fragile objects, like wooden carvings
or sculptures (especially with pre-existing damages).

Best
Stephan

Betreff: [pestlist] Vacuum chamber for IPM

Hello everyone,

I have a opportunity to use vacuum chamber for museum objects pest control, but
I can´t find any trustworthy researches about its pros and cons. Does anybody
know any institution that uses this method, or any publication on this topic?
Thank you for any help!
