Richard,

Many thanks for your recommendations regarding dry drains and flushing water
sources (below). I forwarded this on to our property care team and they were
grateful for this insight.

Best,

Alan,

Yes, those floor drains will continue to run dry and open the floodgate to
roaches and sewer gases. Even in newer buildings where the floor drains are
served by auto-primers, the drains will still run dry if no one is using sinks
nearby.

We’ve recommended to our building managers that they keep the drains primed,
either by periodically adding water, by adding an anti-desiccant (such as
EverPrime) or by fitting a mechanical device (such as GreenDrain) into the
drain. I’ve seen a few toilets / commodes nearby bone dry already. Even the
roaches complained about the dry conditions. So toilets need to be periodically
checked and ‘refreshed’.

Be mindful that all faucets, showers, eyewashes and other spigots should be run
periodically to purge the hot, cold and tempered water systems of sediment and
to diminish the chance of biofilm formation (and Legionella growth).

I managed to get into my building a couple of weeks back and found a lot of
dead cockroaches in a couple of bathrooms. The floor drains were dry and they
came in that way. Normally custodial activities would have kept enough water
in the floor drains to keep that from happening.

We're all going to have plenty of surprises when we return to regular
activities.

Hi Adie,
We might see an increase of incidental insects because of the increase of
birds, as this drags on. Particularly moths and dermestids. We will see (that
is why we monitor). But then again, if you are seeing an increase in the
incidentals, it might be from the window situation that you described to
Richard. The biggest concern is that, since these guys don’t normally live
inside, they will die and provide a food source for the “bad guys”, if not
cleaned up quickly.

We are all facing a reduction in maintenance and traffic. So, in a way, it will
be interesting to see what critters are getting in. This might be a good time
to get a base line of incidentals as well as the usual pest species. There is
less activities in collection spaces as well as galleries. The critters might
come out of hiding. Just a thought.

Good luck – so glad to hear you are not furloughed. I am in the same
situation, planning for reopening and the new normal in teams across the
institution and doing regular walkthroughs of the collection spaces.
Stay safe,
Gretchen

Something interesting in the UK is the increase in birds everywhere (and lack
of people to shoo them away!) and I wonder if that is contributing to the
increase in non pest species….

Hi Adrian,

Yes, you have described the concern precisely. There are a couple of things
that can be done. First - improve housekeeping. Get the carcasses removed ASAP.
Pay attention to where the incidentals are found - this can help you determine
where the incidentals are coming from. Finally, if possible, block their
egress. Also, pay attention to where you find the predators (spiders,
centipedes). They are eating something.

Are there pest species in this context that we should be more wary of
