Subject: RE: [External] - [PestList] Urban pest populations affected by
lockdown worldwide

Hello Armando!

I hope you are well. IPM activities continue apace here at the Met. I have
spoken with the NYC Department of health bureau of pest control about increased
activity in NYC during the shutdown, and I believe they are monitoring rodent
data throughout the city. Rodent complaints were up in January after an
unseasonably warm winter here in New York, when conditions were favorable to
rodents; however, complaints have tapered off as residents are concerned about
other issues. Anecdotally, I have seen an increase in rodent activity in the
empty streets. The lack of commercial waste during the Spring has put the
city's rodent population under pressure, and they are turning up in places they
don't normally inhabit. The changes in water usage in the city have also caused
changes in behavior of the American Cockroach (periplaneta Americana). Urban
wildlife is also under pressure, especially raccoons. I am not aware of
specific surveys being done on urban pest activity during the lockdown, but
Bobby Corrigan has done some press related to the issue (link below), and may
be working on research. I would be interested in learning more about the
experience of pest professionals in museums during the lockdown, and what pest
management will look like in museums as we re-open. We are adjusting as
necessary, and I am happy to talk with any museum IPM folks about our plans for
continuing pest management operations.

Take care,

Michael

Hello all,

I'm trying to find reliable information on the above. Does anyone know if a
field study on urban environments pest have been conducted or planned anywhere?

Thank you in advance.

Armando
