Thank you, Lisa, Adrian, Margaret, and Maria!
I am ever so glad that I joined this listserv! Sounds like Uline is the place
to source, for sure.
With so much appreciation
Rachel

Greetings all,

We've increased our use of poly sleeves in cases where sourcing a large enough
resealable bag was tricky (essentially making our own bags). And now use them
almost exclusively as they save so much labor and cover most of our object size
ranges. This greatly reduced our usage of tape as we heat seal the two open
ends (sealing with two parallel lines, spaced ~ 1/2" or 1.5cm apart). Could be
an option for you all as well.

We also source from
Uline<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.uline.com%2fBL_2107%2f4-Mil-Poly-Tubing&c=E,1,BpxbYIYsFNTkAYKjiLUy2z05eHzlv9hzYHDnGUC9IIA71i3ovse5ls_eeUjZJj0oUeoARUhoEwGk1NLbPQpIgXguCQbYQN4J56sikACx2OmrHUb1y_A,&typo=1>.
They have nice 4mil and 6mil thicknesses. We've found the 18" and 40" wide
sleeves rather flexible in containing rolls and even large boxes, but even
wider sleeves (and indeed, wider heat sealers) are available. We use this heat
sealer.<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.uline.com%2fProduct%2fDetail%2fH-1029%2fPoly-Bag-Sealers%2fTabletop-Impulse-Sealer-20%3fkeywords%3dH-1029%2bTabletop%2bImpulse%2bSealer%2b-%2b20%2522&c=E,1,L3otHETtOMA_vrlKmkZzt4C0pYJG_SSqLME30OONJL3kxL_ZsIfxS7DCLOy3lL_wmGpm-IU_SYLA9iWSGyZ03PxrBFG8NinhT12f1NwYwy1k23gMjQ,,&typo=1>
Another advantage, heat sealing is oddly meditative in these strange times.

Hope this helps!

Maria

Morning from a cold soggy Britain

I undertook research some time ago on polyethylene bags for freezing but most
of it was un-published.

However, we did note the following things to be aware of when freezing and
perhaps someone can fill in the gaps as I don’t have the research any more.

  1. Check the thickness of the polyethene and go for something which is a
thicker grade plastic as it helps prevent moisture transmission
  2. Check that the seals are well made as some of them are pretty thin and
will tear easily.
  3. Zip loc seals are not moisture resistant and need to be taped over as well

Hope that helps

I also use bags from Uline for the freeze/thaw cycle (specifically, these
30"x36" 8 mil poly bags
https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-12510/Flat-Poly-Bags/30-x-36-8-Mil-Poly-Bags?keywords=S-12510<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.uline.com%2fProduct%2fDetail%2fS-12510%2fFlat-Poly-Bags%2f30-x-36-8-Mil-Poly-Bags%3fkeywords%3dS-12510&c=E,1,cOfySFP6p6Dv_tG0uEeB-jCNGMZI5gmmir4UlnK7PHd0aU3Z-q6tGYc-aYeaBgtcRfd9CNYcm2ZXFrES-7umKDdhz3YpUfJ4eGNj7sdPIcg,&typo=1>).
They're good sized bags that allow me to twist the open end of it shut and
seal it with a releasable zip tie.

Best,
Margaret

[External Email]
I have ordered bags from
Uline<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.uline.com%2fGrp_5%2fReclosable-Poly-Bags&c=E,1,V4jqdmk8c-wTTbRk9xAGevBXExP33v7zQB8P0V5AKDx-AE0EWnuzOF1igAsP3oySB24MXD-9NZxRi89v9QDcvcKfEL67NzN1716-t-MLn_E95yAsy-rNd7sm&typo=1>.
Some of these get up to a sufficiently large size easily to hold a full sheet
of matboard or an archival box.

Disclaimer: I am not aware of any testing having been done on these (for
additives, plasticizers, etc.) However, if one is using this only for a
freeze-thaw cycle (and not for long-term storage) it may be justifiable.

Cordially,

Lisa Isbell

Hi, Pest List People!

I am waiting for our new chest freezer and am now researching polyethylene bags
or film for wrapping objects to be treated. I appreciate any advice on this. I
am finding lots of smaller zipper heavy 3 – 4 mil bags available but I will
also be freezing larger objects, and wonder if you recommend and type of film
and a tape that can withstand the deep freeze. Should objects be airtight
before freezing, or just well covered?

Thanks so much for your help
