Hi All,

Thank you to everyone for their responses. It has been very helpful.

We are particularly interested to know more details on the extra costs
associated with the design, construction and operation of a freezer which
operates at -30°C & -40°C, compared to a freezer operating at just below -20°C.

Did anyone in a similar situation, obtain separate costings/quotes for freezers
constructed at different set-points to help them evaluate the cost/benefits of
the two designs? If yes, was there a clear relationship between a temperature
decreases, and % of extra costs?

Many thanks.

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

We found the work of Tom Strang to be very helpful in guiding us on decision
making. I'm attaching a more recent publication of his - figures 1A, 2B and 7
guided us a lot in balancing variables of temperature and object thickness in
determining freeze efficacy. We now have walk in and walk through freezers
which operate at -33C which has meant for us less bottleneck as objects can be
treated in less time, though in our former facility operated chest freezers
which ran at higher temps, which basically just meant treatments took longer
but were still effective. We found insisting on a freezer design at a lower
operating temperature to be worth it for our situation, but if you are not
freezing at huge volumes and often, longer runs may not matter so much.

Good luck,
Maria

Individuals who use freezers in U.S. museums for disinfestation find -20
degrees F., not C. is plenty for most pests you'd encounter in a museum setting.

Dear all
we have a stand alone computer controlled walk in freeze which is -35c and
doubles up as a controlled humidity heating chamber is this is something you
would like details of
the Sofware has been programmed with t4 pre programme settings and there are
bespoke settings for testing etc

Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience with large scale walk-in Freezers running at
around -30°C to -40°C for pest treatments?

We are curious to know if the benefits of shorter treatment times, outweighs
potential WHS issues, and costs the associated with their design, construction,
and operation.

It would be great to hear from you, as we are trying to determine if there is
enough benefit for us to specify temperatures of below -20C for the
construction of a newly built large scale walk-in freezer.

Many thanks,

Stuart
