Hi Margaret,
The images look a lot like the Ptinus fur white-marked spider beetles we see
here at the Anchorage Museum where I am based. We contract with Pied Piper as
our pest management company. They might be able to help or at least put you in
touch with someone in Kodiak who can help: https://alaskapest.com/.
The UAF Cooperative extension is also a good resource
(https://www.uaf.edu/ces/) and they have entomologists who can help with
identification. Derek Sikes would be one to contact
([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>).

Please feel free to contact me anytime!

Best wishes,
Stephanie

Subject: Re: [PestList] Historic building infestation

Tom,

Thank you for your insight.

We had a Historic Structure Report done last year and signs of infestation were
found in our crawl space foundation logs, though they did not appear to be
active. Since then, we have coincidentally seen an increase in a spider beetle
or other potentially wood boring beetle in our regular blunder traps, though it
is unknown if they are the cause.

We are hoping to hire an entomologist to 1) identify what insect was or is
causing the deterioration of the logs and 2) whether the infestation is active.
This information seems necessary to move forward with treatment and National
Historic Landmark building documentation. Do you have recommendations of who we
could contract to do this work?

Here is a link to our historic structure
report<https://kodiakhistorymuseum.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Russian-American-Company-Magazin-HSR-March-22-2022.pdf>
with details and images about the crawl space. See pages 114 and 143 of the
document itself. Also attached are images of the beetles we are finding around
the building.

Feel free to give me a call back if we can talk more 907-486-5917.

There is no way spider beetles could possibly "burrow" into your logs. There
may be old rodent bait somewhere in the structure from which they are
originating. Photos would be essential in helping you identify what might be
happening to the log home.

Subject: [PestList] Historic building infestation
Hello,

A colleague recommended I reach out to this group about a potential beetle
infestation in our historic house museum.

We are a museum located in a historic log building in a remote location. We
have identified a relatively large number of spider beetles in our regular
blunder traps and potential infestation in some of the logs in our foundation
crawl space area. The going theory is that the beetles could be feeding on
debris in the crawl space or wall voids, and could potentially be burrowing
into the logs and covering a relatively large area - but that has yet to be
confirmed. With pest control measures, we need to consider staff and visitor
safety as well as not to contaminate the museum collections.

I am hoping to gain some clarity on how to go about working with contractors on
this issue - has anyone worked with an entomologist or pest control specialist
in a historic house? I would appreciate hearing about any challenges/lessons
learned, any tips, and the general process.

Thank you for your help.

Margaret
