some pinecone type of seed pods may have landed on it. JTV

Hello all -
A few months ago I posted some images of insect trackways in a painting - left
from an insect that crawled across the painting while still wet.
I have some better images attached with a scale bar included. I am curious to
know if it is possible to narrow down what type of insect could have left these
tracks. Maybe a beetle? The painting was painted outside on the bank of a river
outside of Paris if that helps with possible IDs.
Many thanks!

Out of curiosity I sent the original post to our entomologist, who suggested
some of the following searches that might shed some light on the question.
* There is a paleontology discipline called Ichnology - concerned with the
study of fossilized trackways – there are many images of insect trackways if
you do a google image search that might lead to some enlightenment.
* Do an image search on Beetle footprints.
* To get more afield there have been artists who have collaborated with
insects in their art. I am looking for the artist who created a series of
works on paper using silverfish to create patterns of loss. These works were
gorgeous!! If anyone knows her/his name please email me.

We recently had a Van Gogh exhibition where one of the paintings had a small
grasshopper embedded in the paint. It was NOT this painting, but a grasshopper
could be a candidate.

The location of the "footprints" appear to be to the right and slightly above
the sailboat's mast. If I have the correct location, then the insect would
probably have flown onto the wet paint. The footprints do not come from the
left edge of the painting by an insect simply walking onto the painting.

Thanks for an image of the entire painting. I still have a problem locating
the exact location you claim may be insect footprints in the paint. Perhaps
you could circle the area somehow on the painting itself. Thanks.

When we get additional images, I'll make sure to include a scale bar adjacent
to the trackways.
In the meantime, this is the overall painting. The detail is from the tree at
the proper right edge:

Yes, the tracks are ~130 years old. It could have also occurred while the
painting was upright. It is a scene painting of boats on a river, so was
likely painted outside from the riverbank (I should have included that tidbit
from the beginning, apologies).
I am going to get better images.

Hello Christina,
do that means the tracks are already 133 years old if it happened in the "wet"
paint, right? One can recognize the tracks unfortunately only with difficulty
and closer photographs would be of advantage.
Some ideas:
If the picture was lying when it was painted, crawling insects such as larvae
of dermestids or beetles may have walked over it. If the painting was in a wet
state, silverfish are also conceivable, some of which can run vertically or
leave traces on the surface.

Betreff: [PestList] Insect footprint ID?
Hello all -
We have a painting that has evidence an insect walked across the wet paint
leaving a little insect trackway. It's most easy to see in the light blue
where the footprints are in green paint.
Does anyone have any idea if we could narrow down what type of insect created
these marks? It would have been painted outside of Paris in 1890. We are
going to try to get better images in the next few weeks, so even any
suggestions of what to look for would be useful!

Many thanks!
