I have to agree with Gretchen on this…sounds like dermestid damage to me as 
well. Everything will look fine until it’s disturbed and then you realize it’s 
been shored off at the skin level. JTV

Did you find any frass? It could be dermestids. I recommend bagging and 
freezing. Instructions are on Museum pest Network site.

Do not use pesticides.

We have a taxidermy mount of a caracara that has suffered damage. See attached. 
To me, it does not look like the typical destruction from clothes webbing 
moths. It seems that the base and the feathers are getting eaten from the 
inside/underside out, and I don’t see any evidence of frass or casings, just 
dust from the base.



A taxidermist partner suggested it might be bugs like mites and also suggested 
treating them with insecticide.  As this mount is part of the collection, I’m 
hesitant to treat it with anything over the counter.



What do y’all suggest?  Is it mites?  What’s the best form of treatment?
