Dear Nancy, Although I could be completely wrong, that shape and size remind me of certain moth cases (Phereoeca uterella specifically) although it is still not particularly compact or as thin, so perhaps another species. I would agree it seems to be made up of frass of some sort. Looking forward to seeing what the entomologists say!
