Good day Hanna. What type of termites? Also are termites the only pest concern?

Hello pest colleagues,

Our museum is repatriating a collection of objects to a small rural museum in
Botswana, and I’ve been asked to advise on some pest issues they have been
experiencing, along with other conservation concerns. I met them in person
yesterday, and talked them through installing a basic monitoring program, and
some simple and cheap forms of treatment. I recommended solar bagging to heat
treat affected objects, for example.

Their main problem is with termites in the fabric of the building, which I have
no experience of, working in the UK. Does anyone have any treatment or
management tips regarding termites? Even those of a different species than the
ones native to southern Africa could possibly have enough similarities to
provide useful advice.

They also mentioned that when their museum was built 40 years ago, it was
treated with some sort of biocide/fumigant of which they had no details. But,
they are interested and willing to take up floorboards and treat the building
fully before receiving their objects from us, and asked for a less harmful
modern alternative that would treat the termite problem but not affect the
collections. Again, this is not my area so I said I would reach out for help!

Their collection consists of a lot of proteinous material – skins, instruments,
textiles etc. which I know can be negatively affected by many pesticides.

I also just want to make it clear that our repatriation of objects to them is
not conditional at all – they, as museum professionals but not conservators,
have asked us for advice regarding pests, light, display cases etc.

Any advice would be brilliant.

Many thanks,

Hannah Mortell
