Hello Echo,

These look like we have been getting recently as well. I have been calling them
a "small false click beetle" based on size, shape, gross anatomy, and the shape
of the club on the antennae.

Subject: [PestList] Beetle Identification Assistance

Hello PestList Members,

I’m hoping that one of you might be able to assist me in a bit of an
identification mystery.
For the past few months, I’ve been finding these beetles in our collection
storage area. I’ve found about 6 since June, but I’m having a hard time nailing
down an ID. I was initially thinking that they could be furniture, drugstore,
or cigarette beetles; they’re close but (from what I can see based on size,
head shape, etc.) none are an exact match. Our conservator took a look and was
not able to give us a definite ID either, so I’m at a bit of a loss.
We have inspected each object in storage and have found no evidence of
infestation – no bore holes, no frass… nothing! We have also thoroughly cleaned
and vacuumed the entire storage area, but they keep appearing.
I’ve attached some photographs including one taken under a microscope - the
beetles are between 3-4mm long.

Thanks for your help,
Echo Smith
